In his book The Secret of the Rosary St Louis De Montfort explains that the Holy Rosary is made up of two things mental prayer and vocal prayer. Mental prayer is made up of meditation on the chief mysteries of the life, death and glory of Jesus Christ and of the Blessed mother Mary. Vocal prayer consists of saying 15 decades of the Hail Mary, each decade headed by an Our Father while at the same time contemplating the 15 principle virtues, which Jesus and Mary practiced in the 15 mysteries of the Holy Rosary.
